Why D-boxes shift in Southern Maine ground
A distribution box only works if it is level, and a lot of the ground in our area does not stay still. Wet, slow-draining soils hold water close to the surface, and when that water freezes it heaves whatever is buried in it. The poorly drained soils along Cumberland's brooks and rivers, the marine clay in much of Yarmouth and Scarborough, and the high spring water table in Cape Elizabeth are all places where a box can tip over time.
Once a box tilts, one leach line takes most of the flow and saturates early while the others sit dry. The symptoms look like a failing field, which is why checking the box is one of the first steps before anyone recommends a new one. Older concrete boxes also erode at the outlets. Homes built in the growth years of the 1970s and 1980s in towns like Cumberland and Gorham now have boxes that are decades old.
